Birmingham's Industrial Past

Before the risks of the material were known, asbestos was extensively employed in a variety of businesses around Birmingham and the West Midlands between the 1950s and the 1980s. When working directly with the material, many people in Birmingham who were exposed to asbestos were not given any personal protective equipment (PPE).

Many residents of Birmingham and the West Midlands are at a higher risk of contracting diseases associated to asbestos because of the heavy industries in the region. These include mesothelioma in Birmingham, which can take between 10 and 60 years to manifest after the initial exposure, asbestosis, pleural thickening, lung cancer, and asbestosis.

Birmingham previously had a thriving industrial history and was dubbed the "workshop of the world." It's hardly surprising that many workers in a city where a variety of commodities were created in factories were exposed to asbestos during their working life.

Birmingham's university buildings were found to have asbestos.

Are University Students at Risk!

The University of Birmingham has determined that asbestos is present in its construction.

The information was made public after the law firm Stephensons Solicitors LLP requested it from all universities under the Freedom of Information Act. For more on this new story, then please go to our blog page on Asbestos in Birmingham Unis.

If you are in the Birmingham area, do you need one of our services?

There are 3 forms of asbestos that we frequently encounter in our daily surveys with clients.

These are called crocidolite, amosite, and chrysotile. The level of risk associated with asbestos products varies depending on the kind of material and asbestos content.

Asbestos Collection

Asbestos is a dangerous substance. Make sure you understand how to dispose of any asbestos after removal. The removal of asbestos from your home can be taken to Household Recycling and Disposal Centre (the Tip), but only in small amounts that are correctly wrapped up and won't cause any harm and an appointment is needed before disposal.

This does not include asbestos that develops as a result of a trader's work. The trader is required by law in certain circumstances to remove the waste.
