Asbestos deaths: UK statistics

  • Each year, more than 5,000 people in the UK pass away from diseases linked to asbestos.
  • Over the past 50 years, there has been a large increase in the number of annual deaths related to asbestos, and this increase is predicted to continue until the 2020s.
  • It is hoped that asbestos deaths would start to drop starting around 2030.
  • The UK and Australia have the highest mesothelioma rates in the world.
  • People who worked in the construction business where asbestos was widely used are among those who are most at risk.
  • According to data from the Royal College of Physicians, from 2014 to 2019, mesothelioma diagnoses in NHS trusts in formerly industrial districts had the highest number of cases.
  • In Great Britain, mesothelioma deaths decreased by 7% in 2019 to 2,369, from an average of 2540 per year between 2012 and 2018.
  • 1,945 of these deaths were male, and 424 were female. While female deaths remain the same, male deaths are declining.
