Asbestos Waste Disposed in Certain Recycling Centres in Surrey

What is Asbestos Waste and How to Properly Handle It

Asbestos waste is considered hazardous and cannot be recycled or repurposed. To gain a deeper understanding of the risks associated with asbestos, you can refer to the Environment Agency's website for detailed information on why asbestos poses a danger.

It's important to note that none of the boroughs and districts in Surrey offer asbestos removal or collection services. As a result, asbestos-containing materials must either be removed by a licensed asbestos removal company or taken to a Community Recycling Centre (CRC) that is equipped to handle asbestos waste.

Which Recycling centres Accept Asbestos Waste?

To find the nearest CRC that accepts asbestos waste, you can use this convenient recycling search tool.

Advice for Households:

Disposal of Asbestos Waste

Asbestos must never be disposed of with your regular household rubbish or recycling. Instead, it should be managed as follows:

Licensed Removal or CRC: Asbestos waste must be removed by a licensed asbestos removal company or transported to one of the following designated recycling centres:

Transportation by Residents: You may transport asbestos cement waste in your own personal vehicle without the need for a waste carrier registration, as long as it's your own household waste. Additionally, you are allowed to transport your permitted amount of asbestos waste to our nominated sites in a van or trailer, provided you possess a valid van permit.

Please note that only small quantities (up to six sheets) of asbestos cement materials such as corrugated or flat sheets, cold water tanks, rainwater pipes and gutters, lining under eaves, and flue pipes are accepted in this manner. Any other form of asbestos must be handled by a specialist company.

However, if you transport your allowed allowance of asbestos in a van mixed with other construction waste, entry will be denied. General DIY waste is not permitted in a van or trailer, as specified see their construction waste policy.

Before Visiting the CRC:

Contact the recycling centre before your visit to ensure that there is sufficient space in the designated asbestos container for your waste.

Take the following precautions to prevent contamination of your vehicle:

  • Moisten the asbestos cement with water.
  • Double-wrap or double-bag the asbestos cement using heavy-duty polythene.
  • Securely seal the wrapping with tape.
  • Ensure that none of the vehicle occupants can access the asbestos waste.

Upon arrival at the CRC, please inform a staff member so that they can direct you to the designated asbestos waste container. Ensure that the wrapping is still securely in place before unloading the asbestos cement.

During Your Visit:

Upon reaching your chosen site, you will be required to:

  • Complete a 'Declaration of Household Waste' form, confirming that the asbestos waste originates from your own home.
  • Provide identification to verify your Surrey residency. This requirement applies to all the sites mentioned above.

Advice for Businesses:

Asbestos is a hazardous substance, and its disposal should adhere to the regulations governing hazardous waste. Businesses are prohibited from disposing of asbestos waste through facilities intended for household waste, including household kerbside collection bins, street bins, recycling banks, or recycling centres.

For guidance on handling and disposing of business waste, please refer to their business waste page. It is essential to consult the Health and Safety Executive Website for the most appropriate methods of dealing with asbestos to ensure full compliance with regulations, maximum safety, and legal protection for your organisation.

When selecting an asbestos waste disposal company, always verify that they are licensed by the Environment Agency to handle and dispose of asbestos waste.
