Former Beldam Asbestos Worker Receives £320,000 Compensation After Mesothelioma Diagnosis

A former foreman from Hounslow, referred to as Mr. C to protect his privacy, was recently awarded £320,000 in compensation following a diagnosis of mesothelioma, a terminal cancer caused by asbestos exposure. Sadly, he passed away shortly after receiving the settlement.

Mr. C's diagnosis was a devastating shock to him and his family, as he had previously been in good health and enjoying his retirement. Following the diagnosis, Mr. C reached out to asbestos lawyer Ewan Tant to help him pursue a legal claim for the exposure he endured during his working years.

In October 2017, Ewan visited Mr. C and his wife at their home, where Mr. C provided a detailed account of his asbestos exposure. He recounted his time working for Beldam Asbestos Company Limited in Hounslow as a foreman between 1960 and 1963, during which he was exposed to asbestos dust. This exposure, decades later, led to the development of mesothelioma, a highly aggressive form of cancer.

Within just two weeks, Ewan identified the insurer responsible for Beldam Asbestos Company Limited and promptly sent a detailed letter of claim, accusing the company of negligence. As Mr. C’s health rapidly declined, with doctors informing him in early December that he had only weeks left to live, the legal team pushed the case forward with urgency.

By January, the legal team had obtained a medical report from a top medical expert, along with Mr. C’s witness testimony, and submitted these documents to the Defendant. They gave the Defendant a strict three-day deadline to admit liability or face having the claim brought before the Royal Courts of Justice. On the final day, the Defendant admitted responsibility for Mr. C's asbestos exposure.

Following the admission of liability, settlement negotiations were quickly entered into, and a compensation figure of £320,000 was agreed upon. The entire legal process, from the initial consultation with Mr. C to the final settlement, was completed within just three months, ensuring that Mr. C was able to see the conclusion of his claim before his passing.

Tragically, Mr. C passed away only a few days after receiving the compensation he had fought for. While the settlement provided some measure of justice, it also highlights the dangers of asbestos exposure and the importance of pursuing legal claims with urgency for those affected by such illnesses.
